Why is oatmeal healthy?

Oatmeal is known as a nutritious and healthy breakfast, and this is for several reasons:

  1. Fiber: Oatmeal is an excellent source of soluble fiber, especially beta-glucan. These fibers help stabilize blood sugar levels, aid digestion and increase feelings of satiety, leaving you nice and full after eating.
  2. Long-term energy: the complex carbohydrates in oatmeal are digested slowly, gradually releasing glucose into the blood. This provides a long-term and stable supply of energy, unlike the rapid energy spikes and drops caused by simple carbohydrates.
  3. Nutrients: oatmeal is a good source of important nutrients, such as magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, iron and B vitamins. These nutrients are essential for various body functions, including energy production, bone health and immune system support. Pure gain, in other words!
  4. Cholesterol lowering: the beta-glucan in oatmeal has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), which is beneficial for heart health.
  5. Antioxidants: Oatmeal contains antioxidants, such as avenanthramides, which have anti-inflammatory properties and can help protect cells from damage.
  6. Versatile: Oatmeal is versatile and can be customized to suit personal taste preferences. It can be prepared with different types of milk, fruits, nuts and seeds, making it a tasty and nutritious choice for a healthy breakfast or snack.
