20 minutes

Making your own naan is easier than you think and brings the authentic taste of India right to your kitchen. These soft, fluffy rolls are ideal for serving with curries, dips or as a snack with herb butter. With basic ingredients such as flour, yogurt, yeast and a little oil, you can bake delicious homemade naan in no time. Making your own naan gives you complete control over taste, texture and ingredients, and is much tastier than ready-made varieties. It is a fun and satisfying way to complete your Indian meals and impress family or friends.

How to make your own naan

Making your own naan starts with a simple dough of flour, yogurt and a pinch of salt. The dough should be well kneaded and rise for about an hour so that it becomes nice and fluffy. Then you roll it out into oval or round shapes and bake it in a hot pan or oven, possibly with a little butter or oil for extra flavor. You can make variations by adding garlic, herbs or sesame seeds.

Is naan healthy?

Naan is a nutritious bread that consists mainly of flour, making it a source of carbohydrates. When you make your own naan, you can choose whole wheat flour or use less oil and butter, which makes it healthier than ready-made or restaurant versions. It also contains protein thanks to yogurt and milk in the dough. Although naan is nice and rich and soft, it's smart to pay attention to portion sizes, especially with spicy or creamy curries.

Recipes to go with your naan

You can best pair your naan with this chicken tikka masala or for example this curry with sweet potato and carrot.

What you need:

4
215 gr self-rising baking flour
140 ml Greek yogurt
generous pinch of sea salt
olive oil for frying

What to do:

1

Mix the self-rising baking flour with the yogurt and salt. Then knead with your hands to form a smooth ball of dough. Let rest for 30 minutes.

2

Divide the dough into four equal parts and flatten with your hands to the shape of a naan. You can also dust your countertop with some flour for this and do it on that if the dough is a bit sticky.

3

Heat a generous splash of olive oil in the frying pan and fry the naans in it on both sides until golden brown.
