Sweet potato mash with feta and chicken meatballs

30 minutes

Sweet potato mash with feta and chicken meatballs is on your table this week, right? Mash season is on! My first stew of the year is a great one: sweet potato stew with feta cheese, kale and chicken meatballs. Not your average kale. It is incredibly nutritious and the sweet potato goes perfectly with the sour feta cheese. I made the chicken meatballs to go with it, but if you prefer vegetarian, you can also use veggie meatballs. Rather try a different stew? Then go for this sauerkraut stew with grilled apple!

When is stew season?

The stamppot season traditionally runs from fall through winter, when the days get colder and people crave hearty, warm meals. Stamppot is a classic Dutch dish that is perfect for inclement days and dark evenings. The base consists of mashed potatoes, combined with vegetables such as kale, sauerkraut or carrots with onion (hutspot). Smoked sausage or bacon is often served with it for extra flavor and filling character.

The origins of stamppot go way back in Dutch history. Hutspot, for example, is associated with Leidens Ontzet in 1574, when the Spaniards left the city and the inhabitants found a pot of cooked vegetables and meat. Stamppot as we know it today developed further in the 18th and 19th centuries, when potatoes became increasingly popular in Europe. The combination of potatoes and winter vegetables proved to be a nutritious and affordable meal for many families.

Today, stew remains as popular as ever. Not only because of its nostalgic value, but also because it is easy to make and vary. As soon as temperatures drop, the stamppot season arrives and everyone can enjoy this ancient Dutch food again!
