Valentine's Day is the perfect opportunity to make something special for your loved one, and what could be more romantic than baking a delicious, homemade focaccia together? This focaccia for Valentine's Day is perfect for just that. Focaccia is a traditional Italian bread characterized by its thin, airy texture and the rich flavor of olive oil and sea salt. It is easy to make and offers a lot of room for creativity and personal taste preferences. For example, I personally like to top it with different kinds of herbs and vegetables, the so-called focaccia art.

What is focaccia art?

Focaccia art is a method of decorating focaccia bread with different toppings, creating patterns and designs on the surface (top) of the bread. It is somewhat similar to the way some people decorate cakes or pastries, but instead of icing or ice cream, focaccia art uses different ingredients, such as herbs, vegetables, cheese and oils. Basically a kind of savory version of cake decorating, then!

Focaccia art is a creative way to add extra flavor and a special touch to the bread. Popular toppings used in focaccia art are cherry tomatoes, olives, onions, rosemary and cheese. Personally, I also often use parsley and pointed bell pepper, as you can do a lot with those as well.

Focaccia art can be a fun and unique way to present focaccia bread, making it a perfect option for parties, events or special occasions. It can also be a creative way for chefs to showcase their culinary skills and experiment with new flavor combinations. And of course, this focaccia for Valentine's Day is also just hearty fun as a date idea, because it's just romantic to bake bread together, right?

What you need:

For the focaccia
500 gr mix for Italian herb bread
by Soezie
300 ml of water
olive oil
For the topping
2 red pointed peppers
handful of cherry tomatoes
flat parsley
fresh thyme
sea salt
1 focaccia

What to do:

1

Place the bread baking mix along with the water in a food processor and knead into a smooth dough for 10 minutes (or knead by hand for 20 minutes). Then cover the dough with cling film. Let rise at room temperature for 40 minutes.

2

Grease a baking sheet generously with olive oil and pour the dough onto it. Using your hands, gently press into the dough so that it spreads all over the baking sheet. Top with a drizzle of olive oil and massage well. Cover the dough again and let rise at room temperature until doubled in volume (about 40 minutes).

3

Using a cookie cutter, cut out hearts from the pointed peppers and halve the tomatoes. Using the parsley and cherry tomatoes, make florets and place the hearts on the focaccia as well. Top with fresh thyme and sea salt and slide into the oven for 20 minutes. Is the bread getting too brown? Then cover with aluminum foil halfway through.

4

When the focaccia is done, let it cool on a wire rack.
